“Holiday from Hell”
By Winston June 4 2007
Jim called this morning and offered us some tomato plants that he was taking care of for a friend. His friend went on a holiday with his wife, and his wife returned home with her husband in a box.
Jim said: “It must have been like a holiday from hell for his wife.”
I answered: “I can well imagine how she would feel.”
Even though I said that, it actually would be a hard thing to imagine!
Jim said: “My friend was the gardener; his wife is not interested in the garden,
And I don’t have any room to plant them.”
I said: “We don’t have any room in our small yard, but I’m sure that Bill wouldn’t mind if we plant them in his yard.”
Jim replied: “I’ll get them to you some time this week, if Cheri doesn’t make it to my place maybe I’ll see her at your place and bring the plants then.”
After the phone call, I could not get rid of the image of Jim’s friend coming home in a box, and my mind began to wander to a time and a garden long past.
I started to think about the time when Dad came home with some tomato plants that Granny grew from seed, she nurtured the plants in her little English urban garden on 9 Second Avenue.
Dad would rave on at length about his Mother’s prize winning tomatoes!
Now Dad actually didn’t go out in the garden and plant anything, his job was to bring home the plants.
Turning the ground and planting removing the suckers keeping them watered that was Mom’s job.
Back to today, I can’t wait to get those plants in the ground; it has been some time now that Linda and I have had tomato plants in our own garden.
